Beijing furniture manufacturing industry ushered in the "most stringent" environmental standards in July

Implementation of the strictest local environmental standards on July 1

The focus of industrial emission reduction includes atmospheric pollutants such as volatile organic compounds, nitrogen oxides, sulfur dioxide, and soot. The volatile organic compounds released during the coating process of furniture production are one of the sources of atmospheric pollutants. One of the important "contributions" of VOC pollution, and one of the main purposes of the new emission standards set this time is to promote the complete withdrawal of oily coatings from the market.

According to data released by the China National Coatings Industry Association, the total amount of volatile organic compounds (VOC) emitted by the Chinese paint coating industry to the atmosphere is about 4.3 million tons per year, of which oil paint accounts for about 98%, and water-based paints account for about 2%. Zheng Zaihong, deputy director of the Pollution Prevention and Control Department of the Beijing Municipal Environmental Protection Bureau, told social enterprises that the current work is to promote the replacement of all organic solvent-based coatings (oily coatings) into water-based coatings, or they will completely withdraw from the market. "According to the standard implementation date, the requirements for the second period will be implemented from January 1, 2017, that is, the Beijing furniture manufacturing industry prohibits the use of organic solvent-based (oily) paint spraying processes."

Water-based paint promotion accelerated

Water-based paint is an important solution to reduce VOC emissions during furniture production. Yu Xiusu, an expert at the Beijing Furniture Association, said that the Beijing Furniture Association began to pay attention to the promotion of water-based paint in the furniture industry as early as 2012. For now, the proportion of water-based paints used in the furniture industry has risen, but it is still small. Zhu Changling, chairman of the China Furniture Association, believes that moving the production workshops of many furniture companies to Hebei may be a temporary expedient, a fundamental solution, or an environmental rectification.

In the comprehensive replacement of oil paints for water-based paints, Qumei Furniture is the first furniture company to complete the rectification and upgrading. Zhao Ruihai, chairman of Qumei Furniture, said that in recent years, with the upgrading of residents' consumption and the improvement of the quality of life, consumers have become more and more strict with the environmental protection standards for furniture products. The environmental performance of products has become an important consideration for the purchase of consumer furniture. After two years of scientific research and development and production line transformation, the entire line of Qumei Furniture has been changed to water-based paint in 2014. In addition to being more environmentally friendly, the use of water-based paints on furniture is not significantly different from traditional paints. As a pilot demonstration unit of the water-based paint promotion project of the 100 environmental protection reforms of the Environmental Protection Agency, Qumei also participated in the standard and technical reform research on the use of water-based paints.

In this year, the top 100 furniture also completed the transformation of the production line and met the requirements of the new standard.

The furniture company in Beijing is steadily rectifying

In the face of such strict new standards, in addition to the Qu Mei furniture that has been comprehensively rectified and improved, what kind of rectification measures will be carried out by furniture companies in Beijing?

Yao Junjiang, deputy general manager of strong furniture production, told reporters that strong as the old brand of Beijing furniture, has always been particularly concerned about environmental protection. “Since last year, our mattresses and sofas have basically used water-based adhesives. In addition, through the communication with large water-based paint manufacturers, we have developed a good cooperative relationship. In order to ensure the final effect and be responsible for consumers, At present, water-based lacquer furniture is being tested in small batches and has not been fully launched, but it is believed that in the near future, strong water-based lacquer products will be fully available." In addition to strong furniture, Huari Furniture, Ruichi Furniture, Tiantan Furniture and TATA Home brands such as wooden doors have also improved to the extent of water-based paint technology.

The cost will not be passed on to the consumer

He Hongyi, general manager of Beijing Baiqiang New Home Trading Co., Ltd. believes that for the industry, the new standard will definitely form a situation of survival of the fittest. Many small businesses can't cope with the rising costs, and the products themselves have no features and price advantages, and can only be eliminated by the industry. Yao Junjiang, deputy general manager of strong furniture production, also revealed to reporters that it would cost about 16 million yuan to renovate a paint production line. "This is invisible to set a higher threshold, and companies that are unwilling to invest in this money will eventually face exit."

For consumers, it is a good thing that furniture products are more and more environmentally friendly, but there are also consumers who ask questions. Rectification means that companies have to spend a lot of money. However, will these costs be passed on to consumers and prices will increase?

Zhao Ruihai, chairman of Qumei Furniture, said that the use of water-based paint for spraying, first of all, the environmental protection upgrade of the production line, including the addition of water-based paint automatic spraying production line and supporting facilities such as central dust removal facilities, boiler renovation and construction. "Qumei has invested more than 20 million yuan in this area. Although this has greatly increased production costs, we will not pass this part of the cost to consumers, and in the last few years and this year's several price adjustments, we followed Market conditions, even lower the price of some products."

Other companies have also said that the cost of technological transformation will not be reflected in consumers.

How difficult is it to replace water-based paint ?

At present, many consumers have already understood that water-based paint is a water-based thinner, organic solvent-free paint (containing only a small amount of ethanol), which does not contain benzene, formaldehyde (no one is added), free TDI ( Toluene diisocyanate), toxic heavy metals, and non-toxic and non-irritating. It sounds like "magical", but in fact, water-based paints have been widely used in many foreign countries.

Dr. Yao Kejun, a professor at Wenzhou University, told the Beijing Morning Post that the current cost of water-based paints and ordinary paints is not much different, and the current domestic water-based synthetic technology is absolutely mature. For furniture companies, it is not difficult to replace water-based paints across the board. The two-year period given by the government is still quite abundant.

He believes that it is just that the company may need to pay some attention to changing the operation process and operating the machine: "The operation process is actually nothing, but when you use it, you need to re-run and change the temperament according to your own product. It is like Table tennis players, playing a pen-hold shot into a horizontal shot, as long as more practice is no problem."

Wood Flat Bit

Spade bits are used for rough boring in wood. They tend to cause splintering when they emerge from the workpiece. Woodworkers avoid splintering by finishing the hole from the opposite side of the work. Spade bits are flat, with a centering point and two cutters. The cutters are often equipped with spurs in an attempt to ensure a cleaner hole. With their small shank diameters relative to their boring diameters, spade bit shanks often have flats forged or ground into them to prevent slipping in drill chucks.
Some bits are equipped with long shanks and have a small hole drilled through the flat part, allowing them to be used much like a bell-hanger bit. Intended for high speed use, they are used with electric hand drills. Spade bits are also sometimes referred to as "paddle bits".
Spade drill bits are ordinarily available in diameters from 6 to 36 mm, or ¼ to 1½ inches.
