Monocotyledonous plants, 650 species of 10 genera, are widely distributed in temperate and tropical regions of the world. There are about 80 species of Dioscorea in China.

Because of its rich nutrition, it has been regarded as a good and cheap product since ancient times. It can be used as a staple food, as a vegetable, or as a snack such as candied fruit.

China is mainly produced in the northern part of Henan Province, and is also cultivated in Shandong, Hebei, Shanxi, Central South and Southwest. After the winter stems and leaves are withered, the roots are cut, washed, and dried.

The Chinese yam cultivated mainly includes two types of common yam and field potato. Ordinary yam tubers are small, especially in the ancient Huaiqing House (now in Jiaozuo, Henan, including Mengzhou, Boai, Fuyang, Wuyi, Wenxian County, etc.), the yam is famous, called "Yi Yam", It is known as the "Wai Shen" and is the highest in the country.

There are four local yam applications that have applied for national geographical indication protection products. One is that Changshan yam is produced in Shandong Zouping, and the other is “iron stick yam” which is produced in Henan Jiaozuo Wenxian and Mengzhou; One is “Chen Ji Yam” which is produced in Chenji Town, Heze City, Shandong Province, including “chicken skin brown yam” and “Xishi seed yam”; one is “Buddha yam”, the origin is Hubei Wuxue; in addition, Jiangxi Ruichang The yam of Nanyang Township of the city also applied for the protection of national geographical indications. In addition, Nancheng County of Jiangxi Province, as the largest Huaishan planting base in Jiangxi Province and one of China's three major Huaishan production bases, was audited by the Ministry of Agriculture in 2011, and the registration of agricultural products was granted and protection was implemented.
